Throwback Thursday: Dionne Warwick - "That's What Friends Are For"



Written by Burt Bacharach and Carole Bayer Sager and first recorded in 1982 by Rod Stewart for the soundtrack to the movie Night Shift, Dionne Warwick's hit single "That's What Friends Are For" hit the top spot on January 18, 1986 and stayed there for four weeks. Warwick's recording, which also featured Elton John, Gladys Knight and Stevie Wonder, was billed as sung by "Dionne & Friends" and released as a charity single for AIDS research and prevention. "That's What Friends Are For " won the Grammy Award for Best Pop Performance by a Duo or Group with Vocals and Song of the Year. Its sales raised over US$3 million for its cause.
