Friday Night Throwback: Leon Haywood - "I Want'a Do Something Freaky to You"

This week's Friday Night Theowback is dedicated to Leon Haywood, the silky smooth R&B singer-songwriter and producer who passed away in his sleep at 74 earlier this month. The Houston-born Haywood began his career as a blues musician before achieving success in the '60s, '70s and '80s in the soul, R&B and funk genres. During his long career Haywood charted 20 hits on the Hot R&B/Hip-Hop Song chart, including the No. 2 hit "Don't Push It Don't Force It," "Keep It In the Family" (which peaked at No. 11) and "I Want'a Do Something Freaky To You" (No. 7). Haywood also wrote Carl Carlton's "She's a Bad Mama Jama (She's Built, She's Stacked)," which reached No. 2 on the chart and earned his only Grammy Award nomination for writing the tune, garnering a nod in the 1981 Best Rhythm & Blues song category. His 1975 single "I Want'a Do Something Freaky to You", which is featured here, served as the groovy hook on the Dr. Dre and Snoop Dogg duet "Nuthin' But a 'G' Thang." The song was also featured in 50 Cent's "Corner Bodega" and Aaliyah's "I Gotcha Back."

Prince on Tavis Smiley

As any Prince fan knows, when it came to interviews he was pretty elusive. That's why it was always a tremendous treat when he opened up and talked about his childhood, current events, politics, spirituality, his inspirations and of course his music with longtime journalist Tavis Smiley back in 2009.

Prince Dies at Age 57

The loss of Prince hit me like a ton of bricks today. I knew that he was briefly hospitalized for flu-like symptoms the other day, but considering that he was released the same day and back to doing shows the day after, I like millions of fans worldwide, thought he'd be fine. Granted, I wasn't always a Prince fan. Growing up in Brooklyn, I was such a huge Michael Jackson fan that I very naively had it set in my head that either you liked MJ or Prince. You couldn't possibly like both. But after meeting with and becoming friends with some huge Prince fans in college, not only did I slowly begin to open my ears to Prince's massive discography, but over the years started debating who had the better catalogue, Prince or MJ. For me, Prince was more than a great musician. He redefined R&B/soul music. He was arguably the most versatile artist ever in conquering at least 4 different genres of music. He was a social activist who loved his people. He was a role model. He was an epic performer. He was a sex magnet. He fought for his art. He stood up against powerful record companies. He inspired many of the artists we love today, from Beyonce to D'Angelo to Lenny Kravitz to The Weeknd and many others. He was a pioneer. He was and will always be a legend. #RIPPrince #Prince

Friday Night Throwback: Aretha Franklin - "A Rose Is Still a Rose"

Having recently celebrated her 74th birthday and with a long-planned biopic finally near ready, this week's Friday Night Throwback is dedicated to multiple Grammy winner and the Queen of Soul, Aretha Franklin. In 1998, Franklin collaborated with Lauryn Hill (who produced and wrote the record) for "A Rose Is Still A Rose," a heartfelt ode that saw Franklin dispensing advice to an unsuspecting young woman who's had her first round of unrequited love, having made out with a scheming dude who, as Franklin sings, spouts a "sticky game." Off the album of the same name, "A Rose Is Still a Rose" became a instant hit for Franklin, 40-plus years into her legendary career, reaching number twenty-six on the Billboard Hot 100, Billboard Hot 100 and number-five on the Hot R&B/Hip-Hop Songs chart while also reaching the UK top forty. The song also helped its parent album reach gold status and remains one of Franklin's most played songs from her later years.
