Friday Night Throwback: Zhane - "Hey, Mr. DJ"
Discovered by DJ Jazzy Jeff and record exec/manager/producer Benny Medina, Zhane (Renee Neufville and Jean Norris) stood apart from the 90's R&B scene with their versatile grooves and short bald ‘dos. The duo, who met while both were studying music at Philadelphia's Temple University, released their debut album, Pronounced Jah-Nay in 1994. The album would produce a trifecta of Top 40 hits ("Groove Thang" & "Sending My Love") as well as one of the top hip-hop party anthems of all time, "Hey, Mr. DJ". Produced by Naughty by Nature DJ Kay Gee and originally recorded and released on the compilation album Roll Wit tha Flava in 1993, "Hey, Mr. DJ" (which also featured a rap from Rottin Razkals member Fam) would peak at number six on the Billboard Hot 100 chart, go gold as a single and propel Pronounced Jah-Nay to platinum status.
