Back in 1998 and 1999, Jesse Powell, then an up-n-coming singer with a four octave range signed to MCA out of Gary, Indiana, had ladies swooning with the single "You", written by Powell and producer Carl Roland. So hot was "You" that it appeared on Powell's first two albums, Jesse Powell and 'Bout It. Released as a single in 1999, it became the biggest hit of Powell's career, peaking at number two on the Billboard Hot R&B/Hip-Hop Songs chart and at number ten on the Billboard Hot 100.
