Friday Night Throwback: The Drifters - "Under the Boardwalk"
A staple of barbershop quartets, jukeboxes and any popular DJ's Top 25 classic soul list, the Drifters 1964 hit single, "Under
the Boardwalk" was set to be recorded on May 21, 1964, but the band's lead singer, Rudy Lewis, died of a suspected heroin overdose the night before. Produced by Bert Berns and co-written by songwriters/producers Artie Resnick and Kenny Young, it would be The Drifters former lead vocalist Johnny Moore who was drafted to sing lead on the song after Lewis' death. A certified hit from the beginning, "Under the Boardwalk" would chart at number four on the Billboard Hot 100 charts.
