Released in late '97 as the 2nd single from Mariah Carey's sixth studio album of the same name, "Butterfly" was written by Carey and Walter Afanasieff; both of them produced and arranged the song as well. Conceived while Mariah was in the midst of her separation from then husband Tommy Mottola, "Butterfly" is a ballad combining elements of pop and gospel genres. While not a huge success (compared to other singles from the five-times platinum album), "Butterfly" still charted on the Hot 100 Airplay, peaking at number sixteen.
