Produced by the legendary Gamble and Huff for their Ship Ahoy album in 1973, The O'Jays single "For the Love of Money" (title taken from well-known Bible verse, 1 Timothy 6:10) peaked at number three on the U.S. Billboard R&B chart, and at #9 on Billboard's Pop Singles chart in spring 1974. Although the album version of the song was over seven minutes long, "For the Love of Money" still received substantial radio airplay and remains an O'Jays staple.

Throwback Thursday: David Ruffin - "Walk Away From Love"

"I heard in [his voice] a strength my own voice lacked," once said Marvin Gaye, about former Temptations co-lead singer David Ruffin's distinctive voice. This was especially true with 1975's "Walk Away from Love", from his 7th solo album Who I Am. Produced by Van McCoy and written by Charles Kipps, "Walk Away from Love" would serve as Ruffin's only number-one R&B hit, and only one of two Top 10 pop hits for Ruffin on the Billboard Hot 100 chart, the other being "My Whole World Ended (The Moment You Left Me)", which also peaked at #9. "Walk Away From Love" would eventually sell over one million copies, and was awarded a gold disc by the R.I.A.A. in February 1976.
